Concerning Meekness and Humility

Here’s an often misunderstood passage in the Scriptures. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5 KJV).” We often get the wrong impression. Meekness and humility certainly don’t imply low self-esteem. We surely cannot interpret those verses as God saying He is going to turn the keys to the earth over to a bunch of ‘Caspar Milquetoasts’ or poor souls with low self-esteem. No Way! As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite. Meekness simply means submitting to a higher authority; humility means giving credit to that higher authority. Whereas low self-esteem becomes a noose around various people’s necks, prohibiting them from being the best they can be; meekness means ‘coachable’—capable of being easily taught and trained to do bigger and better things. Meekness in no way diminishes our strength or abilities, but serves to harness our energies, leading us to accomplish greater goals. It should be noted here that in the KJV, the word “meek” occurs 17 times in 16 verses, and in each case it is shown to be a valuable and rewarding attribute. When we are told In both Psalm 37:11 and Matthew 5:5 that “the meek shall inherit the earth” He is saying that He is reserving that special privilege for souls, large and small who have submitted all their gifts and talents to the authority of Almighty God.
Let me tell you a couple of interesting stories illustrating meekness and humility Consider the wild stallion. He is such a potentially magnificent animal. He is big and strong, fast and beautiful. He has near unbelievable ability and stamina. But he is wild and untamed, serving no profitable purpose. If and when he is brought into subjection under a talented master, he is in no way less powerful. He has lost none of his strength and beauty. If we abide by the adage, ‘beauty is as beauty does’, he is actually becoming even more valuable and beautiful as his vast energies are harnessed to the greater good. He is being transformed from a wild, useless beast of the open range into a superb object of pride and great value to his master, capable of performing a number of strenuous, profitable tasks. Because of his ‘coachable’ attributes, his harnessed strength has become so legendary that we even rate engines by their ‘horsepower’.
And in the second illustration of meekness and humility, consider Gale Sayers. I would suppose that any sports fan who is familiar with great football running backs of the past would include Gale Sayers as one of the greats. He is considered by many to have been the greatest open field runner in college football history. While playing college football for the University of Kansas, he was twice recognized as an All American. He was then Chicago’s first-round pick in the 1965 NFL draft and was able to translate his remarkable college football prowess into the NFL. In his first season he established all sorts of rookie records including most touchdowns (22), tied for most touchdowns in a game (6), highest career kickoff return average (30.56 yards), and tied for most return touchdowns in a game (2). Sayers played all seven years of his illustrious pro career for ‘Da Bears’ and was an NFL 4-time Pro Bowler & 5-time First-Team All-Pro. He was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One would readily conclude that if anyone could deserve to have a highly inflated ego, Gale Sayers would have fallen into that category.

But he didn’t. As he wrote in his autobiography, “In college my track coach was Bill Easton, who had compiled an outstanding record at Kansas . . . And it was Bill Easton who taught me about work . . . The first time I went into Coach Easton’s office, when I was a sophomore, I saw the sign, like a placard, on his desk: I AM THIRD. I wondered what it meant. So finally I asked him. He said, `The Lord is first, my friends are second, and I am third.’ I don’t live by it all the time, I know, but keeping the saying close to me helps bring me back, keeps me from straying too far from that philosophy.” That little placard evidently struck a nerve in the budding star and became the motto of his life. He was obviously ‘coachable’. His humility became one of his main virtues. Even the title of his autobiography is ‘I Am Third’ and became the basis for the 1971 movie Brian’s Song, a true story about his friendship with fellow Chicago Bear Brian Piccolo who died of cancer. As great as Gale was, I think the majority of us would probably respect him as much, or more, for his meekness and humility as for his prodigious ability as a running back. In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis wrote, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.”

As strange and improbable as it may seem, the same can be said of us. When we become meek (coachable)—when we submit ourselves to Almighty God—when we make Him the Lord of our all our spiritual gifts and talents and energies, we too can say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13 NKJV).” Then when we have accomplished great things through to strength of our all-powerful God, humility should automatically follow. Humility doesn’t mean hiding our pride behind an ‘Aw Shucks’ attitude. But, true humility in our lives means giving God all the credit for any and all accomplishments we have achieved. We should readily acknowledge the source of our strength. I would also call our attention to a couple of interesting Scripture verses regarding humility. In James 4:10 we read, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up (KJV)”. And again, “Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:6 KJV).” And as the previous verses and illustrations indicate, true meekness and humility have excellent pay days. “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him (1Corinthians 2:9 NKJV).”

News Flash! JESUS was and is POLITICALLY INCORRECT!

News Flash! JESUS was and is POLITICALLY INCORRECT!
Or so is claimed by our pop culture! In the mind of today’s warped pop culture, that’s a serious offense! In today’s world, political incorrectness is the most heinous of all crimes. And at the very top of their list of heinous crimes is any inflammatory act or remark aimed toward homosexuality. In their sight, no one is more deplorable than a so-called homophobe. Thus, if Jesus was alive today, He would once again be crucified; not necessarily by the laws of the land but certainly by our vaunted pop culture. He would be brutalized by the mainstream media, by the talk show hosts, and by the ‘stars’ of Hollywood. It even extends into the penal system. If a ‘straight’ man commits any ‘crime’ against a homosexual man, it is considered a ‘hate’ crime, and thus draws a much harsher penalty. I am utterly amazed at the rate of speed that the homosexual community has morphed from the closet, to ‘coming out’, to raucous gay parades, to gay and lesbian churches, and now sanctioned gay marriages; all within my lifetime. I hold no malice against friends and relatives who are involved in such unnatural activity, but my strong feelings against their lifestyles are Biblical. According to the Scriptures, it is still sin and depravity.
Accordingly, by their standards, the Bible itself would necessarily fall into that same ‘blasphemous’ category. We got an up-close and personal photo of that when Phil Robertson of ‘Duck Dynasty’ ignited a national controversy by including homosexuality in a list of pretty bad sins enumerated in the Scriptures. It should be noted that he was not merely exposing his so-called homophobia, but was quoting 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 nearly verbatim. Just for the record, that Scripture contained a substantial list of notoriously degenerate people. The ‘PC police’ doesn’t seem to bristle over calling out any of those other degenerates, but don’t dare include homosexuals in that infamous list. As you well know, Phil did, and for that he was suspended from his wildly successful TV show. In so doing, they were not only attempting to defame him, but were actually indicting God’s Holy Word through him. He was soon reinstated, but inquiring minds such as mine are inclined to wonder if that reinstatement was due to their repentance or the realization that considerable income would be lost. The money trail nearly always trumps noble intentions.
Today’s society seems to have brushed any memories of Sodom and Gomorrah under the rug. The term ‘sodomy’ has long since disappeared from our vocabulary. Nevertheless, those twin cities were a noted haven for homosexuals; and God demonstrated his utter disapproval of their degenerate lifestyle when He destroyed them with fire and brimstone. The result of that great fire evidently created such depression in the earth that their location is now considered to be at the bottom of the Dead Sea. That should have been a lesson to all generations that followed. But quite the opposite is true! In today’s society homosexuals are declaring that they are simply wired differently—that God created them that way. Today’s openly defiant gay and lesbian society seems to have no fear—no shame—no remorse. They insist that they are simply coming to grips with ‘who they are’, and since ‘God created them that way’, for them it is not sin. WOW! How bold do homosexuals have to be to blame God for their ‘unnatural’ lifestyle? Has God changed? Has the Bible evolved to fit the times?
By way of comparison, let‘s take a look at the ‘natural’ lifestyle. For instance, God also created me the way I am. I am just a normal red-blooded American man. As such, I am attracted to beautiful ladies. I will be the first to admit (very shamefully) that I have on occasion lusted after ladies other that my own sweet wife. That’s just ‘who I am’. That’s the way I am wired! So, does that give me license to commit adultery with every pretty lady who might submit to my advances? Should I obey the lusts of my flesh just because ‘God made me that way’? Would it be His fault if I became an adulterer? I don’t think so! That would put me and my lifestyle into the same infamous list with all the other degenerates listed in1 Corinthians 6:9-10. Paul addressed that problem to the Christians in Rome in chapter 6, verse 12: “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts (NASB).” He also wrote a little note of personal testimony in 1Corinthians 9:27: “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should *become disqualified (NIV).” *Note; In the KJV that phrase is ‘become a castaway’. Whew! Not good! Even the great apostle Paul had to deal firmly with the lusts of his flesh. We should also be reminded of the fact that most of the Children of Israel who, after being delivered from Egypt, never made it to the Promised Land. Why? In 1 Corinthians 10:8, we find one of the reasons: “Nor let us act immorally as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day (NASB).” Another lesson ignored!
So, if we are so bold as to state that such unnatural activity is still sin in God’s sight, we’re classified as politically incorrect; we’re hate mongers—extremists—homophobes. Thus, in today’s society, if Jesus walked on earth again, the ‘PC’ police would also immediately label Him as a person filled with hate—an extremist—a homophobe! Sadly, as such He would be brutally and unmercifully pummeled by our own vaunted pop culture. I guess, to them, He would be the chief of all offenders; a sad commentary on today’s society.

God’s Cruise Ship

Aside

God’s Cruise Ship

I must admit, I have a weird mind! As I was reading the Bible the other day, I once again ran across that familiar little phrase, ‘as in the days of Noah’. Suddenly, my mind began to wander. What were the living conditions during ‘the days of Noah’ especially as it relates to the ark? What was life like on the ark? How did Noah gather all those animals into the ark? Did he have to trap them or did they just all wander in to get out of the weather? How did he know when all the species were accounted for? Did he have a passenger list to check off each animal as it boarded? What if uninvited extras tried to get in? Did the ark contain stalls or did all the animals have the run of the whole ship? What did the lions and tigers eat? What about the birds of prey? Did Noah have to include a bunch of extra rabbits and vermin for them? And the cows and sheep; did the ark contain a hay loft? Did any of the occupants ever get sick or die? What about all the bodily refuse? Whew! Who had clean up duty? Where did Noah and his family stay? Was it like living in a barn, or was there a separate apartment for them? What kept the ark from breaking up or tipping over and killing every creature on board when it landed on the side of that mountain? Questions, questions, questions!

So, if the end times are to be like the ‘days of Noah’ surely there’s brighter a side to that story! Otherwise, who on earth would look forward to spending a thousand years living in that type of smelly, crowded barn? Not me! But, perhaps the untold story is that God must have made that ark into an unbelievably comfortable, enjoyable, safe haven for all its occupants for the entire duration of the flood waters. He evidently transformed that crude ark into some sort of perfect cruise ship for them. Then I imagine the Lord Himself hand picked each animal for Noah to gather into the ark. It is not only possible, but probable that all the animals—the wolves and lambs, the lions and calves, the leopards and goats all lived together in peace and harmony during that entire ‘voyage’. It is also probable that all the animals were (or became) vegans, and dined on a diet of grass together as one big happy family— and that the Lord provided the fresh green grass every day just like He provided food for the Children of Israel in the desert. It is also possible that the Lord God kept the deck clean and fresh with water from Heaven every day. No doubt the Great Physician was with them on the ark at all times keeping them free from any sicknesses and diseases. And, since the Lord was the pilot of that ship, we can rightly assume that the ark landed safely and upright in the cleft of a rock.

Are all these miraculous imaginings no more than the musings of a weird mind? Yes, but all are possible! According to Ephesians 3:20, God is able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or even imagine! Our God is an awesome God!
